The second largest island in
the Japanese archipelago, Hokkaido is located north of the
main island of Honshu and is known for its national parks,
rugged coastline, volcanoes and hot springs, and great ski
resorts. With only 5% of the Japanese population and 22% of
Japan's land mass, Hokkaido had a wide-open landscape and
offers a welcomed retreat from the crowded cities. Hokkaido
has several large national parks - the most famous being Shikotsu-Toya
in the south, Daisetsuzan in central Hokkaido, and Akan in
the west. It is a wonderful destination for those visitors
wishing to do some hiking, camping, skiing and snowboarding,
and hot spring bathing.
