Butsudan at Muryoko-in

Location: Mount Koya, Wakayama Prefecture

Welcome to Muryoko-in. This large traditional Buddhist Temple (see definition of ryokan styles below) and was originally built in the Heian period (794 to 1185). The name means immeasurable light and it is dedicated to Amida. Muryoko-in has 30 Japanese style guest rooms all without private baths or toilets though there are 2 indoor public bath (one for women and one for men). Dinner and breakfast are "Shojin-Ryori" (Buddhist Monk vegetarian meals). Muryoko-in has a mornig service which guests are invited to attend. Check in is at 15:00 and check out is at 9:00.

Directions: From JR Shin-Osaka or JR Osaka train station, take the Midosuji subway line to Namba subway station, about a 15 minute subway ride. From Namba take the the Nankai Line to Koyasan. In Gokurakubashi you change to the Cable Car, which goes to Koyasan Station. From there you can take a bus to Koyasan. At the cable car station, ask for "A Guide to Koyasan" (the English map of Mt Koya) and you will see Muryoko-in. It is about a 20 minute bus ride and the closest bus stop is Koyasan Keisatsumae Bus Stop (the Koyasan Police Station). From the bus stop you go straight to the next traffic light. There you go right and Muryoko-in is around 100 meters further on the left side.
