Rengejo-in

Location: Mount Koya, Wakayama Prefecture

Welcome to Rengejo-in. This traditional Buddhist Temple (see definition of ryokan styles below) is located near the Mount Koya cable car station. Rengejo-in has interesting temple architecture, a traditional Japanese garden, and 46 Japanese-style guest rooms. Rengejo-in provides shared baths for both women and men, and "shojin-ryori" or Buddhist Monk vegetarian meals are served to the guests. After breakfast, there is also a Japanese/English lecture about the history of Mt Koya and Buddhism. Check-in time is after 3:00pm and check-out time is before 9:00am. Parking is available and some English is spoken.

Directions: From JR Shin-Osaka or JR Osaka train station, take the Midosuji subway line to Namba subway station, about a 15 minute subway ride. At Namba subway station, transfer to the Nankai Railway Station. It is a 1 hour 30 minute train ride on the Rapid Express train on the Nankai Koya rail line to Gokurakubashi train station. From Gokurakubashi train station, take the Koya-san cable car up Mt Koya, a 5 minute cable car ride. At the cable car station, ask for "A Guide to Koyasan" (the English map of Mt Koya) and you will see Rengejo-in clearly marked in front of the second bus stop (Ishinguchi Bus Stop).
