Located on the west end of Kyushu
Island, Nagasaki is one of the most beautiful cities in Japan.
The city encompasses Nagasaki Bay and rises up to its surrounding
hills, and a distinctive European and Chinese flavor remains
in the city as a result of its long history of contact with
overseas traders and missionaries. Nagasaki opened its port
to European and Asian traders in the 16 century, and the city
has been influenced by the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and
Chinese over the years. Today it is possible to observe the
architecture as well as enjoy the cuisine and festivals of
these countries in the city. Nagasaki is also the site of
Japan's second atomic bombing, and thousands of visitors make
their way to its A-Bomb Hypocenter. Although the major tourist
sites can be enjoyed in a day, it is well worth spending a
couple of days exploring the streets and neighborhoods of
this unique and cosmopolitan city.
