Saitama Prefecture is an inland
prefecture located just west of Tokyo on the Kanto Plain. The
prefecture consists of mountains in the west, plateaus in the
center, and lowlands in the east. One of the prettiest parts
of Saitama is the mountains and rivers within the Chichibu Tama
National Park. On December 3 the "Chichibu Night Festival"
is held and visitors can see fireworks and the gorgeous floats
parading all night long. At the northern end of Chichibu, visitors
can go boating down the Ara River through the Nagatoro gorge.
Other attractions include the Japanese doll museum at Iwatsuki
and historical architecture dating back to the Edo Period (1603-1867)
in the old castle town of Kawagoe.
